LAKE WOOD

LAKE WOOD - in english

These days Copenhagen Design Week is taking place and one of the cool new companies displaying their design is Danish Lake Wood. Lake Wood is a Danish-owned furniture company established by Allan Lundberg, a timber merchant, and the designer Benjamin Salomon. This is the story behind their furniture: Beneath the surface of Lake Kenyir in Malaysia lies the Kenyir valley. Here, mahogany and acacia trees have lain submerged since 1978. Only recently have people become aware of the fantastic wood species which for the past 30 years have stood protected against pollution and exploitation. Encouraged by the Malaysian government, the Thye Hing Sawmill has now started the extremely tricky task of clearing the lake. The government wants to boost the lake' commercial uses, which is currently severely restricted by the old trunks which in many places interrupt the lake's smooth surface. The Thye Hing Sawmill employs Thai pearl divers equipped with pneumatic chainsaws and barges to carefully fell and ship the fabulous trees to the sawmill. Here the timber is given new life as beautiful planks. As the wood is dead through flooding, it is not subjected to the same reactions which trees normally undergo when they are felled. This means that the lake wood is far more dimensionally stable and consequently very suitable for furniture, verandas and wood flooring. www.lakewood.dk
