Siren gives time a shape: Norwegian designer wins this year’s time to design - new talent award.

On thursday the 26th of August, 2010 Hans Jørgen Bruno Hansen of TA presented the winner of Time to design – new talent award 2010 at an event at the Danish Art Workshops. Designers from 34 different countries have applied, but the jury’s choice is the 28-year old Siren Elise Wilhelmsen from Norway and her project Developing time – Time Developing.

The Jury said:

“The jury finds Siren Elise Wilhelmsens rather intricate design project very fascinating. It can be seen as basic research in design. Its use of a philosophical starting point to address a fundamental human condition and give shape to an – invisible – phenomenon of life makes it both interesting and pertinent. The outcome of Developing Time – Time Developing can either be interpreted in an artistic or design oriented realm of understanding, but the project is so different that it carries potential to show the world something truly innovative. By awarding the Time to Design – new talent award to this young Norwegian designer the jury wishes to give Wilhelmsen, in her own words, time to design time...”

The winner project

Developing Time – Time Developing is a further development and refinement of her graduation project from University of Arts, Berlin, Time Machine 365 – Knitting Clock. The Knitting Clock-project was designed to measure and register time in a three dimensional form to visualise the otherwise invisible time factor, which connects us all. The project can best be described as a merge of a knitting machine and a cuckoo clock. Every passing of a half hour is marked by the knitting of a mesh, a full day is registered in 48 meshes and a year results in an approximately two metres long scarf.

Siren Elise Wilhelmsen will spend the time in Copenhagen exploring ways of bringing the project closer to the end user. She is interested in personalising the time production by making the knit respond to factors like movement, sound, and light.

Who is she?

Siren is born in Bergen, Norway, but has been living in Berlin since 2002. She took her degree as an industrial designer from Universität der Künste Berlin and TU-Berlin. She has taken part in projects for Moleskin Notebook and DMY International Design Festival.

Unique platform for the design talent

Time to design was established in 2008 and is an international design award with focus on the needs of young design talents in the beginning of their career. The award has been established to create a unique platform for young design talents within the design industry – a platform that can contribute to the winner’s future professional career. The winner is granted with three months residency at the National Workshops for Arts and Crafts, 50.000 DKK donated by the Danish Ass. of Wood and Furniture Industries, and a two week exhibition in Normann Copenhagen Flagship Store. This year the winner will also get career coaching by the company OeO.
