The Battery steps ahead

A four year collaboration between the site’s owner, the Bach Group, the architects BIG ‐ Bjarke Ingels Group, landscape architects PK3, the engineering company Grontmij Carl Bro and city planning consultants Hasløv and Kjærsgaard moves forward as the political process progresses.

The Battery, an architectural interpretation of an Alpine landscape of 124.000m2 in the center of Copenhagen, seeks to weave together the three currently disparate neighborhoods into one overlapping urban activity centre, offering apartments, offices, shopping, child care provision, sports facilities, cultural institutions, a hotel and a mosque.

“This project is all about integration – the functional integration of all aspects of city life into a unified environment, the urban integration of the three neighborhoods, the cultural integration of Islamic and Danish culture, by incorporating the first mosque ever built in Denmark and finally the integration of landscape and architecture.” Bjarke Ingels, BIG’s Founder and Creative Director

The Battery’s fusion of architecture and landscape makes up a unique complex that welcomes activity and involvement across age, ethnicity and social status. The development is characterized by a terraced plinth that can be divided into two activities: the plinth either opens towards the streets through large public foyers inviting the pedestrians to wander into and through a bazaar like retail experience or the plinth’s landscaped terraces offer pedestrians to walk over and across the site to connect the diverse neighborhoods surround The Battery. A large promenade along the southern edge of the site offers public functions, retail shops, benches and landscaping.

“The design is created by following the principals for view, daylight and accessibility that altogether reflect Copenhagen’s existing profile. The Battery is designed with consideration to the surroundings, both landscape and the architecture and will contribute significantly to the area” Project Leader, BIG, Ole Schrøder

The Battery consists of four interconnected spaces, interpreting known landscape motives: the view, the park, the promenade and the garden. At the same time the site is connecting to the adjacent neighborhoods through the green bike route throughout the area – a diverse and open program that makes it possible to meet future needs.

Currently the project has entered the Municipality of Copenhagen’s public process allowing all citizens of Copenhagen to comment upon the design and changes to the city’s current Master Plan throughout the summer. The final decision to move forward will be made in the Fall of 2010 and if all moves forward then construction could begin as early as Spring 2011.
